History

Morrinsville Wheelers was started in 1964. Since then, the club has produced many New Zealand representatives, including:

  • Jack and Steven Swart (Steven a three time Tour de France rider).

  • Olympian Tom Bamford.

  • Julian Dean, currently New Zealand's top ranked rider who races professionally for the Credit Agricole  team in Europe.

  • Double Olympian Roz Reekie-May (current rider), Cycling NZ Road Cyclist of the Year in 2001. Roz was fifth in the Women's Road Race at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games.

  • Mark May (current club captain),  represented New Zealand in Switzerland, Italy and Taiwan. Also represented New Zealand on the track at Oceania level.

  • Eliot Crowther (current rider), represented New Zealand at Junior World Track Championships at Under 19 level in 2005.

Club secretary Bev May was the first woman to hold a racing licence in New Zealand. Bev is a UCI qualified commissaire and has worked at Commonwealth Games level in this capacity.

The New Zealand Road Nationals have been held in Morrinsville three times and the club's Open is one of New Zealand's oldest surviving races. The club celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2004.
