09/06/2008: "Craig McConnell & Cates Cup Trophy Day"

Riders participated on a fantastically sunny day from Bolten Road.

Craig McConnell Memorial Cup for Junior riders

Junior U13/U15/U17 riders raced a 22km (Bolten Road, Taharoa, Starkey, Bell and return to finish at Balance). This was flat for the first part and VERY hilly on the second part. It was tough to choose a circuit that was stretching our U13 riders ability but not too easy for the U15 & U17 riders. All children raced up the Bell Road hills by themselves and did fantastically well! This was a handicap race with
Julia Williams starting with a 30 minute lead from scratch riders Charlie Murrell & Patrick Burrows. Liam Aberhart put in a huge effort on his own the whole race and took line honours with only four seconds to spare at the line from the scratch riders. Joshua Collins was the first U13 rider with Kirsty Burrows not far in behind. Kirsty Burrows had a fantastic ride, being passed by Sebastian Wright on the hills didn't stop her from giving her guts, she put in a gutsy effort on the down hill towards the finish to beat him across the line. Julia Williams also got caught on the hills by Michael Smith, but was able to catch up and pass him, unfortunately didn't quite hold on with about 500m to the line was passed again.

Thank you to lead car Mary Aberhart, corner marshalls, Dave May, Shayne Collins, Quentin & Sandra Ginever. This made the event safe for the little riders of our club.

Cates Cup - 60km

Open riders all participated in this grueling course: Bolten Road, Kiwitahi, Henry Watson, Morgan Road, return via Kiwitahi to finish at Balance. The first rider back was not the winner. Henry van Mill broke a spoke, much to his annoyance!

Handicapper Bev May sent Wayne Aberhart away early with an extra 30 minute start on the field. This was Wayne's first attempt at 60km (Furtherest he has done previously was 42km in a race!), let alone the Morgan Road Hill! Bev suggested that the course would take him around 3 hours, in which he managed in 3hours 3 minutes and 26 seconds (WELL DONE WAYNE!)

The first rider to complete the course was visitor Rob Taylor (from Ramblers Club in Hastings), he led the sprint out from Mark May who will be awarded the trophy. John Cottingham was in no-mans-land. Courtney Lowe led the bunch sprint to roll out the top six to finish. Fastest time was taken out by Andrew Weatherly who complimented fellow scratch bunch rider Mike Jones for keeping him going up those nasty hills!!
