08/11/2008: "Kaimai Cycles Invitation Race - Saturday 9 August"

Sixty Three riders turned up for racing on Saturday at Kiwitahi Hall. Numbers were down on previous years with only 37 taking part in the 65km prestigous event for the Mushroom Industry Trophy (since 1979). Kaimai Cyles have sponsored prizes again this year and their support is much appreciated. Thank you to Morrinsville riders who provided a substantial afternoon tea!

Junior U13 riders - 10km competed in an out & back course.

Junior U15 Riders - 16km competed on one circuit of the Milliken Rd circuit. Local rider Charlie Murrell rode through the field but was unable to beat Robin Hacker Cary of Te Awamutu in the finishing sprint.

Open Event - 64km

This race had 37 starters with large time gaps between bunches. Given previous results on this course it was assumed that riders would be caught but few were. Limit was Bob Cammock who was caught on the second lap after pedalling alone. The second group away was working well and managed to follow the lead car to the finish. At times the pace was hot in the tail wind down Milliken Road. Local riders took out the top four positions after a hugely contested sprint Sandra Ginever was able to inch away from Lindsay Williams - the whole bunch were very close over the line.

The third bunch to start had good numbers but didn't work together to pull in the leaders. They caught up six minutes over the four laps with over three minutes taken out of the leaders in the first lap. Maddy Brunton and Courtney Lowe were power houses but attacking efforts on the hills did not help the bunch consistency. Fastest time was taken by Cameron Holt from the scratch bunch.
