08/03/2008: "Hazel Summers Trophy Day"

34 riders came out to race two times Hangawera Circuit for the annual Hazel Summers Memorial Event. Under 13 riders did an out & back circuit. U15 did one circuit (for a time) then completed a second circuit with the adults (for training). The U17 & Open riders completed two circuits of Hangawera Road. Winds were quite strong, and a little rain added to the mix... Bev wants to remind a certain group of scratch riders to be on time for their start next race (wonder who that would be??).

No wonder we are sick of weekend rain (apparently our area has only had four days of sunshine for the whole month of June!!).

U13 Results - 12km

1 Theo Wright 31.15 (fastest time) (Trophy winner)
2 Michael Smith 36.19
3 Christian Smith 35.23
4 Feud Sedick 33.10 (2nd fastest)
5 Achmad Sedick 36.15

U15 - 21km

1 Charlie Murrell 37.42 (Trophy winner) (started in bunch with adults/U17 then sprinted to finish his first lap before continuing the second for training - Charlie did really well to hang on to his bunch for as long as he did!).

U17 - 42km

1 Gavin Wolfe 1.23.32 (Trophy winner)
2 Louis Wright 1.07.41
3 Gemma Murrell 1.34.06

Open - 42km

Limit riders were caught by Sandra Ginever, Gary Carleton, Gavin Wolfe, Charlie Murrell (U15 race), Don Western at the end of Hangawera Road. Dave May called out that the front of the race was about 1km ahead. This made the chasing group work really hard to catch the leaders going up Tauhei Road. Only Pete Hansen and Jacob Lim were strong enough to catch on. They worked well in the group and hung in for the most part of the tail wind section. Pete dropped off, but Jacob held onto the bunch until the finish. Visitor Don Western rode away from his group with about two kilometres to go. This leaving Jacob Lim, Sandra Ginever and Gary Carleton to a sprint finish. Sandra used her experience to shelter from the wind and only just beat Jacob across the line. Both Gary & Jacob have shown huge improvements in the short time they have raced in the club...
