06/28/2008: "Club Ride 28 June 2008 - Mangateparu"
You would know from the weather forcast of late that riders in Morrinsville were in for some wild and woolly weather! All morning it was either raining or threatening to, that was until Bev called the first 5,4,3,2,1 - Go! When Wayne & Liam Aberhart headed out on the 45km journey (funride circuit) from Mangateparu to Quine, Tainui, Tauhei, Morrinsville-Tahuna roads and back to Mangateparu. Whilst the weather was indeed cold, riders successfully travelled their journey without one single drop during the race. This too was fortunate for club helpers waiting back at Mangateparu hall.
While the open/U15/U17's were on their way the Under 13 hosted only four riders. Michael Smith put in a great effort in the two laps of Loop Road to win in a time of 37:21. He was apparently almost caught by Theo Wright after the first lap but found a burst of steam to break away again and can be truly satisfied with his efforts. Bev suggested that Michael would win 'rider of the day' if there were such a prize... Michael & brother Christian have been riding with Morrinsville Wheelers for around two years, it is great to see progress!
U13 Results 2x Loop Road 14km:
1 Michael Smith 37.21
2 Theo Wright 34.50
3 Joshua Collins 31.46 (fastest time)
4 Christian Smith 38.10
Open/U15/U17 race 45km
Ben Olesen & Louis Wright thought they were hard done by in the handicapping today, but managed to plough their way through the 26 strong field pegging one group at a time until the finish line where they got to the front with about one kilometre to go! Break had a difficult ride with only Roz Reekie-May, Mark May and John Cottingham holding the fort with second-break hosting 10 riders who were riding strongly (although split up on Quine Road Hill) and almost held on for the win. Junior rider Courtney Lowe put in a lot of solid work to maintain 3rd place, this will bode well for her as she soon heads off to Australia as part of the New Zealand junior team. (We wish you well Courtney). Greg Hampton also put in a great ride for 5th (Greg recently competed in the Tour of Taranaki and had two stage wins in D Grade)... Gemma Murrell put in a good effort riding away from her bunch mates.

Meet at the May's house 10am (if you are running late phone Bev). All are invited: Rules Bring your own food/drink, bring appropriate clothing (i.e. rainjackets), bring your own spare tubes and tools necessary for changing tyres, be prepared for rides up to 100-120km (you can of course turn home early if you wish to...), be prepared to climb some hills! This is a great opportunity for school aged riders & anyone else who can make it to some training rides to ride with a group and get the longer distances done with more ease than riding alone! Updates for these rides will be on the NEWS section of the website!
