03/11/2008: "Kaimai Cycles Twilight Series - Race 19"

A record 60 riders came out on this beautiful night to race the Kaimai Cycles Twilight Series. North westerly winds prevailed making tonights racing (from Bolten Road) tail wind out, head wind back for the nine U13 riders (12km). Everyone else did one circuit from Bolten Road, Taharoa, Starkey, Left onto Bell Road (2x nasty hills) and left to finish at Balance (19km).

It is quite interesting for those of you who have ridden this circuit before (Kaimai Series Race 3) to compare your times - on the most part people have improved dramatically - and you will see on that date only 25 riders compared to 60 tonight!!

U13 - 12km

Thanks to Mary & Cillian Aberhart for being the turn marshalls this week. Mary informed us that Julia Williams was first to turn tonight with the two Smith boys in behind, she was over taken but held out the rest of the field to finish third. Joshua Collins was 4th and held fastest time. One of the Sedid boys had an oopsy at the turn when he tried to go too quickly, fell off, but got on his bike again and powered home.

U15/U17/Open - 19km

The wolfe family will celebrate tonight as husband and wife duo Roger & Kay Wolfe came first & second. They had an excellent ride with Adrian Smith and Dave May, Robin Stafford and Georgina Read (U15) powered home to make the top six.

The front bunches were working really well and basically no groups caught anyone, some riders went the wrong way (oops!!), a couple of riders missed their start, a couple of flat tyres and a crash.

Bruce Robinson hit another rider's back wheel and fell, Pete Hansenhaving nowhere to go also fell, as too did Rebecca Kingsford. Unfortunately the ambulance was back in business, Bruce went to Waikato hospital and has a broken collarbone. Rebecca damaged her bicycle and has a few scratches to her arms, and Pete had concussion but is recovering at home - hopefully taking it easy for the next few days. Just as well Rebecca had ordered a new bike - looks like she will need it!!

The Break bunch worked like trojan's to keep ahead of scratch, with new club rider Rob Russell winning the sprint ahead of Quentin Ginever and Vickie Burr. Ben Olesen did his usual (if you don't know - put in a huge effort to break away from the scratch bunch) only to be held to the line by Evan Smith, Rex Thorley and Mike Jones. Amongst the scratch group was dropped rider Charlie Murrell (U15) who hung in on the flats.

Welcome to new riders, Terry Beach, Rob Russell, Nathan Krozier, Nathan from overseas, Annette Harris... We hope you come back again.
