02/19/2008: "Kaimai Cycles Twilight Series - Race 16"

53 riders came out for a race starting at Hangawera Road. Thanks to the usual volunteers who help run the racing: turn marshals, judges, timekeepers etc. Your work is much appreciated by all riders. Thanks to Claire Williams for supporting the younger riders in their 12km race tonight. You help keep them safe, thanks!

Mark May was watching tonight from the sidelines. His recovery is going well, bruising etc... Approx six weeks in a sling and lots of sleep will help him back to form. Thank you to all people who have been well wishers for Mark. The club signed a card to cheer him on.

U13 - 12km

There was quite a group of U13 riders out there tonight with Achmad Sedik (7 years old) racing for the first time, he took line honours in 34.42 which is a fantastic effort. Fastest time went to late arrival Ben Pulman who very nearly missed his start. On scratch this week we had Ben Pulman, Theo Wright & Fuad Sedik (who is Achmad's older brother). Julia Williams continues to put in improved efforts and is getting used to her racing bike (loaned from the club) Julia's sister, Therese, also got out there again tonight. Great to see so many families supporting their youngsters in cycling, keep up the great efforts.

1 Achmad Sedik 34.42
2 Christian Smith 31.10
3 Michael Smith 33.22
4 Ben Pulman 28.29 (fastest time)

1 lap 21km - Mixed age groups

1 Georgina Read 47.02 (U15) - came over from Tauranga to race.
2 Charlie Murrell 38.30 (U15) - went on to race a second lap but given 2nd for points purposes.
3 Ryan Vanderpass (U15) 40.30
4 Liam Aberhart (U15) DNF chain troubles
5 Adrian Smith (open rider) punctured tyre!
6 Joe O'Connor (U17) pounctured tyre!

42km race - Open/U17/U15

The first seven riders of tonight's race put in a huge group effort, catching bunches but leaving much behind. Charlie Murrell was one of the few to hang on for almost a half lap (great effort on U15 gears). Scratch had Matthew Luckie take off leaving Ben & Adrian a minute behind - great effort Matthew. It is great to see all the U17 riders out there giving cycling a go. Each week we are seeing improvements in your riding, learning to lap through in bunches is a great start. Plus, your times are improving. Keep it up!!

Scratch races to be held (bunch starts) as Bev May will be at Invercargill at the NZ Track Nationals for the week. PLEASE ARRIVE ON TIME TO START AT 6.30pm as it will take a little while to get starting bunches organised. They will try to be fair as possible to put you in the right grade.

We wish Quentin & Sandra Ginever and Louis Wright well down at the nationals. Also Bev is Manager & Dave May a handler/Mechanic.
