02/12/2008: "Kaimai Cycles Twilight Series - Race 15"
38 riders turned out tonight for a race around Tahuroa Road circuit (open, U17 & U15). The U13s did approximately 10km to Bell Road and back, thanks to Mary Aberhart for turn marshall & Claire Williams for riding with them.
Under 13 & 15
1 Liam Aberhart 26.29
2 Joshua Collins 21.41 (fastest time)
3 Fuad Sedid 22.42
4 Therese Williams 32.58
5 Julia Williams 31.15
Open/U17/U15 - 36km (circuit now on Mapmyride.com)
Riders went one circuit of Taharoa Road and returned to Ballance. Limit Rider Ken O'Connor held on to the finish with one minute behind the bunch with Sandra Ginever, Erik Harrewijn, Shane Robinson, Sam O'Conner, Gavin Wolfe, Anthony Vanderpass, Scott Jackson, Zac Smith, Bruce Robinson, Charlie Murrell, Henry van Mill, Mary van Huysen all having a go at the finish line with trackie Sandra taking the line honours!
Second Break had a hard time with only three riders, Bob Puru, Vickie Burr, Paul Doelman were chasing down the group of five two minutes ahead - they saw them up the top of the hill but were unable to bridge the gap. The bunch out front took their time up the hill to stay together then really worked hard on the down hill and flats. As they caught other riders they ensured that they worked as a group and as the group grew it gained momentum.
Scratch raced hard and caught Break as they turned into Scotsmans Valley. They formed a big bunch of eight. Unfortunately there was a major incident just before the finish line with Mark May falling heavily and waiting for an ambulance. The bunch ahead of the crash sprinted and was won by Quentin Ginever, Ben Olesen and Evan Smith. Louis Wright had trouble keeping up down the hills on scratch tonight - U17 gearing!!
Mark May is out of hospital, he has broken his collar bone and a fractured rib. He has graises and bruising internal and exernal - but considering the speed of the crash (at about 60km/hr) and the impact of fall Mark considers himself lucky that he hasn't got worse injuries. Mark's Helmet is smashed - as it was made to do... Remember ALWAYS WEAR YOUR HELMET!!! Mark is currently at home - very sore. Thank you to well wishes for phoning Bev & Sandra.
Thanks to Erik Harrewijn for your assistance with the accident - your Policeman experience proved invaluable tonight!
