02/05/2008: "Kaimai Cycles Twilight Series - Race 14"

49 riders met at Mangateparu to experience the 6km circuit of Loop Road (with varying numbers of circuits per grades). A number of club members came from out of town as well including: Tauranga, Matamata, Thames, Hamilton, Te Kauwhata - thanks to them for their efforts each week. The club is going really strong at the moment and we always welcome everyone! Welcome to new riders also.

Weather Watch: South Easterly - strong winds and a cooler temperature than previous weeks!!

Thank you to Bev May & her trusty team of helpers who organised the event, put out STMS signs, marshalled corners and helped with judging etc.

Open & U17 riders

This week riders completed five circuits of Loop road. Handicaps were as follows:

Limit, 10 mins, 12 mins, 16 mins, 18 mins, 20 mins, 25 mins, 28 mins. Some riders moved forward a bunch as they have track competitions coming up and the Twin Dams event (fun ride)... It was quite a good handicap with five laps scratch was only 1 minute 28 down on the limit bunch with one lap to go. They pushed really hard but were not able to catch the front (this is a change from previous weeks). Riders that moved forward were able to lend a hand and support them as they learned to lap it out.

Some of the new U17 riders have been getting a hard time with hanicaps - Bev has decided next week she is going to give them a better head start - we want to keep riders encouraged. It has taken a little while for riders to settle into a 'bunch' which is more their level. The boys are strong as anything but are still learning to lap it through... This will come - keep it up guys!!

Gemma Murrell put in a fantastic effort tonight and was in the front bunch (with Terry Semmens, Shane Robinson, Graham Smith) only to be caught with 3km to go, she couldn't quite make the transition but pushed really hard to finish strong. The others were able to get in the group and pull turns, great going guys! Lindsay Williams bunch commented on his improvements, riding like a 'strong man.' John Marnethrust & Adrian Smith put in huge sprint - great to see poeple being competitive in their bunches. Tonight Greg Hampton put in a huge effort up the Loop Road hill sitting in behind Stephe Crowther who put in a hard attack, he held on and was able to ride past right on the line, judges suggested a tie but Stephe admitted to being 2nd. Greg has shown huge determination and improvement, he was so tired after tonights race his first reaction was to stop and rest a while on the sidewalk. After a little encouragement he went for a cool down (very important part of racing!!).
